Questioning Certainty in Research:
Rethinking Method/ologies in Rhetoric and Writing Studies

Dr.  Ashley J Holmes, Oregon State University
Dr. Elise V Hurley, Illinois State University

In this talk, we challenge researchers to rethink their method/ological choices and to envision new possibilities for future research designs. We highlight the value of revisiting and reflecting on research methods and methodologies with two primary goals in mind: to shed light on the processes commonly elided between research design and publication and to make explicit that the method/ologies we use in our research require praxis. Drawing on examples featured in the edited collection Learning from the Mess (2024), we share snapshots of how researchers in rhetoric and writing studies revise, resist, rethink, and reconstruct research method/ologies.

2:40 – 3:00    Break

3:00 – 5:00     Research Roundtables and Works-in-Progress Discussions
